No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
